Generative Visual Systems

Authored visual systems that produce continuous variation through defined rules, real-time software, responsive inputs and time.

Real-time generative visual system producing responsive image states for a spatial installation

An authored system in continuous motion

A generative visual system begins with a defined visual language. Colour, form, density, rhythm, movement and composition are encoded as relationships that can develop continuously in real time.

Refractiv establishes the stable elements, the parameters that can change and the pace at which transformation unfolds. These boundaries preserve the identity and quality of the work across every generated state.

Visual identity encoded in rules

Art direction and software development progress together. Visual decisions become parameters, behaviours and constraints, allowing the system to create variation while maintaining a consistent character.

The resulting work can remain calm and atmospheric, build intensity, respond to people or data, and move between distinct content states. Each transition remains part of the same authored visual world.

Inputs, states and time

Generative systems can respond to visitor presence, movement, occupancy, time of day, environmental data, operational cues or internal simulation. Inputs influence selected parameters according to the intended behaviour of the installation.

The system can also move through scheduled, curated or operator-controlled states. This creates a flexible content layer for spaces with changing programmes, audiences and operating conditions.

Software developmentReal-time rendering, shaders, simulation, input handling and control logic

From prototype to operation

Prototypes establish visual quality, behaviour and technical feasibility before the final system is deployed. Resolution, frame rate, colour, latency and the relationship between input and response are tested against the intended display and site conditions.

Commissioning carries the approved system into the installed environment, where output, controls, sensing and operational states are calibrated together.

Applications

Generative visual systems are developed for museums, cultural institutions, public art, corporate environments, hospitality, retail, exhibitions, events and virtual production.
