Unreal Engine Tokyo
Refractiv and Global Produce developed a series of seasonal real-time environments for a filmed performance in Tokyo. The R&D study explored how photorealistic worlds could change responsively while remaining available for live direction and production.
Project Details
Year:2023
Collaborating partner and project lead:Global Produce
Location:Tokyo, Japan
Media layer:Seasonal real-time environments for a filmed performance
Platform:Unreal Engine
Outputs:Real-time scenes, filmed performance and edited sequence
Refractiv role:Environment design, look development, animation, real-time production, filming and edited sequence production
Realistic worlds produced in real time
The study explored a more photorealistic approach to real-time visual generation. Refractiv developed environments that could move through different seasons, weather conditions and atmospheric states while retaining one visual direction.
Working in a real-time engine allowed environmental decisions to remain active during production. Light, weather, colour and movement could be adjusted while filming, connecting the visual-development process directly to the performance.
From real-time scenes to a filmed sequence
Refractiv designed the environments, developed their look and animation, and operated the scenes during filming. After production, the practice edited the recorded material into the final sequence.
The project demonstrates how real-time engines can support spatial visuals that respond and change while maintaining the material detail associated with a photorealistic world.
