Ondulations Luxembourg

Ville de Luxembourg wanted to enliven a renovating façade on Place de Paris. A discreet camera reads pedestrian movement and turns it into fluid waves of light across the glass.

Brief and site condition

In the heart of Luxembourg, a building on Place de Paris was undergoing renovation. The city commissioned an artwork to activate the street during the works and invite people to engage with the site as part of their daily movement.

Refractiv developed the interactive media system for Ondulations, working alongside TIJO Studio and Brain & More. The installation transformed the movement of passers-by into fluid waves of light across the glass façade, turning everyday pedestrian flow into a living layer of the building.

People influenced the composition simply by walking past. Their presence shaped subtle changes in rhythm, density, and movement, allowing the façade to respond to the street without asking for direct interaction.

Generative waves and presence

Motion, light, and architecture came together as one continuous material. The installation translated everyday movement into a field of generative waves, evolving gradually as small changes accumulated over time. Brief pauses left gentle traces before dissolving back into the whole.

The visual system was shaped around the depth and geometry of the glass façade, giving the building a second, living state while preserving its architectural presence. Surface and space remained in dialogue: movement became visible, and the rhythm of the city became part of the work.
