Spatial media systems bring together content, software, sensing, lighting, networks and physical infrastructure. Commissioning coordinates these layers within the completed space, verifies how they perform together and prepares the installation for daily operation.
Refractiv supports the process from technical planning through installation, system configuration, calibration and handover. Creative intent and technical performance remain connected throughout, so the installed system behaves as designed and can be operated, maintained and updated with confidence.
The work is organised across five connected stages.
| Stage | Scope | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Planning | Execution drawings, equipment layouts, signal paths, control architecture, network requirements and coordination with architecture, AV, lighting and fabrication teams | A coordinated installation specification shared across the project team |
| Installation | Positioning, connection and activation of sensors, displays, projection systems, lighting equipment, media servers and control hardware | Each component installed and checked against the system design |
| System configuration | Media servers, networks, real-time applications, playback systems, device communication, startup sequences, recovery procedures and backups | A stable operational core prepared for scheduled or unattended use |
| Commissioning | Calibration of visual output, sensing, tracking, lighting, timing and system behaviour, followed by testing under site conditions | A verified installation with documented settings, operating procedures and handover information |
| Operations | Remote diagnosis, software updates, backups, system reviews, content revisions and coordination with local service partners | The installation maintained in its commissioned state as operational requirements evolve |
Commissioning considers the complete behaviour of the environment rather than each technical layer in isolation. Visual output is assessed in relation to architecture and lighting. Sensing is calibrated against circulation, distance and visitor behaviour. Software, networks and control systems are tested through normal operation, startup, shutdown and recovery conditions.
Handover can include system documentation, configuration records, operating instructions, backup procedures and training for venue teams or technical partners. The required level of documentation and support is defined according to the scale, permanence and operating model of each installation.
Lifecycle support extends this continuity after opening. Refractiv can provide remote diagnosis, software maintenance, system reviews, content updates and technical coordination. Where local attendance is required, service partners receive replacement specifications, implementation instructions and validation procedures, allowing repaired or updated components to be returned to the commissioned configuration while preserving the original spatial and behavioural intent.
