Interactive football game Multi-site sports experience

BMO Goal Challenge, Canada

BMO wanted a penalty shootout for its fan zones in Toronto and Vancouver, where a camera and impact sensors combined to give every shot a fair, instant result against a responsive digital goalkeeper. Commissioned by Commersive Solutions, Refractiv designed the interaction and developed the two parallel event systems.

Brief and site condition

BMO brought a penalty shootout experience to soccer fans during its viewing events in Toronto and Vancouver. Refractiv designed the interaction and technical system, working alongside Commersive Solutions to create an outdoor experience that could handle repeated play across multiple match days.

Fans stepped up to a real football and took part in a short multi-shot penalty challenge at a large LED goal. A digital goalkeeper reacted in real time, creating the feeling of a live shootout with immediate visual feedback after each attempt.

Experience flow and responsive design

The experience was designed to feel simple and direct: one ball, one goal, and a clear result as soon as the shot landed. BMO-branded animations marked each outcome on the LED wall, keeping the pace fast and the queue moving for the next player.

Behind the visible game, the system combined spatial tracking and impact sensing to establish where each shot reached the goal, with game logic assigning the result and the digital goalkeeper responding through the LED surface.

Two parallel event systems

Refractiv’s scope covered game mechanics, responsive system design, hardware specification, installation planning, contractor guidance, on-site supervision, operator training and remote support. Commersive Solutions led the physical production, LED wall and AV installation, while Stingray and Commersive Solutions developed the wider event concept and production.

The experience ran during select BMO soccer viewing events in summer 2026, and both installations completed their scheduled event periods.
